12 remittance fighters detained

The families and the National Revolutionary Council of 12 Bangladeshi expatriates detained in Saudi Arabia have demanded their release before Eid. They have claimed that they were arrested for participating in the remittance boycott movement in July in support of the quota reform movement. This demand was made at a human chain organized in front of the National Press Club on Sunday (March 16). In addition to the family members of the detainees, the leaders of the National Revolutionary Council, Bangladesh National Human Rights Association, Agragami Media Vision and Jago Shishu Kalyan Federation were present in the human chain.

The speakers claimed that the remittance boycott was called as part of the anti-government movement last July. After this, the expatriates organized a ‘Shokriya Mahfil’ in Saudi Arabia. However, the Saudi police arrested the 12 expatriates based on false information from government supporters.

The detainees include Md. Badal, Ismail Hossain, Md. Kausar Hossain Swapan, Ershad, Jewel Rana, Md. Shakir Hossain, Md. Habibur Rahman, Md. Abul Hossain, Mohammad Jamil Hossain, Mohammad Yakub, Saddam Hossain and Masud Gazi.

The speakers in the human chain complained that the Bangladeshi ambassador to Saudi Arabia had not taken any effective action in this regard.

Later, under the direction of the convener of the National Revolutionary Council, Khomeini Ehsan, a delegation submitted a memorandum to the Chief Advisor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare.
